MOONSPELL es una banda portuguesa de Black / Metal Gothic que fue fundada en 1989, bajo el nombre de MORBID GOD.

Bajo el nombre de MORBID GOD editaron el Demo: “Serprent Angel” en 1992 y se enrumbaron en un ascenso casi meteórico. Luego, surgió el Demo: “Anno Satanae” bajo el nombre de MOONSPELL. Posteriormente, la compañía discográfica francesa Adipocere les ofreció su primer contrato discográfico por el Demo: “Wolves from the Fog / Goa ton Fire”.

Así, surge el disco que los catapultó: “Wolfheart”, el cual fue producido con el aval del sello alemán Century Media. “Wolfheart” basó su lírica en poemas escrito por su vocalista Fernando Ribeiro (en plena adolescencia) y eran divulgados bajo el alias de “Langsuyar Tenebrarum Rex“.

1995 fue un año trepidante para MOONSPELL En esta etapa de su carrera, la propuesta Gótica predominaba, y surgió otro  trabajo discográfico con esta “tendencia musical”: “Irreligious” y embarcarse de gira europea con TIAMAT y MORBID ANGEL. Luego, con SAMAEL y TYPE O NEGATIVE.

Para 1998, surge: “Sin / Pecado” y son llamados a ser teloneros de las giras de KISS y MANOWAR para seguir cosechando adeptos a su propuesta musical.

En el año 2000, realizaron una gira por Alemania, secundando a  KREATOR y KATATONIA.

El disco: “Darknes and Hope” del 2001,  fue bien recibido por la crítica y sus seguidores y en la producción se incluyó una versión del tema: “Mr. Crowley” de Ozzy Osbourne, en el cual se rindió tributo al fallecido guitarrista Randy Rhodes. Al finalizar este mismo año, visitan Estados Unidos, de gira, como cabeza de cartel y comparten tarima con LACUNA COIL (diciembre 5 del 2001).

El 2003 fue un año de muchos movimientos para MOONSPELL. Ellos re grabaron la canción: “I’ll see you in my dreams”, incluida en la banda sonora de la película de terror portuguesa, homónima al título del tema. Luego, Aires Pereira, ex integrante de MALEVOLENCE, ocupó el pusto de bajista de la banda. En noviembre, realizaron una gira norteamericana junto a TYPE O NEGATIVE y CRADLE of FAITH. En diciembre, retornan a la carretera en Europa junto a LACUNA COIL, PASSANGER y POISONBLACK.

Con poco tiempo para recargar baterías, el 20 de enero, en Edmonton, Canadá, iniciaron otra gira: “Lamentations Over America Tour 2004”, siendo teloneros para OPETH.

Para el año 2006, salió al  mercado el disco: “Memorial” bajo el auspicio del sello discográfico SPV/Steamhammer. A su vez, obtuvieron el premio: MTV Award europeo de “Mejor banda portuguesa” y el disco fue catalogado con honores por la prensa especializada y sus seguidores, gracias a canciones como: “Finisterra” y “Luna”. A tal punto llegó el éxito de “Memorial” que se re edito dos veces y se incluyó los temas: “Atlantic” y “Phantom North”.

Tras finalizar su contrato con el sello Century Media, la compañía discográfica publicó un disco de grandes éxitos de la banda, llamado: “The Great Silver Eye” en el año 2007.

Por su parte, MOONSPELL, editó el disco: “Under Satanae” en 2007, dónde se incluyó el material de los primeros Demos y EP propios.

En el 2008, apareció su DVD y CD en directo titulado: “Lusitanian Metal”, y con el aval del sello discográfico SPV surgió el 19 de mayo, el álbum: “Night Eternal”, en el que contaron con el aporte de la cantante Anneke van Giersbergen.

Fernando Ribeiro, participó en el 2009 en un disco tributo a la cantante de fado portuguesa Amália Rodrigues, titulado: “Amália Hoje”, y aportó su talento en los “O Grito” y “Formiga Bossa Nova”.

Por cierto, MOONSPELL, tiene su propia postal de correo en su país natal, al reproducírseles la portada del disco “Wolfheart” de 1995. El sello postal está disponible desde el 19 de julio del 2010.

A finales del 2010, MOONSPELL realizó varias presentaciones en formato acústico por Portugal. En dichos recitales compartieron la tarima con el quinteto OPUS DIABOLICUM y el coro femenino CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN SINGERS. La gira inició el pasado 30 de octubre del 2010, en el Cinema São Jorge, en Lisboa.

En el 2012, luego de un largo silencio, MOONSPELL, publicó su nuevo álbum de estudio: “Alpha Noir/Omega White“.

MORBID GOD, fue una banda portuguesa de Black Metal formada en la ciudad de Lisbon, en 1989. Este Demo sólo contiene la canción: “Serpent Angel“, única composicion oficial registrada,  antes de cambiar su nombre, al mundialmente reconocido MOONSPELL, en 1993.
