Visión Rock

SLAYER es una de las bandas más influyentes a nivel mundial, gracias a su desenfrenado estilo. La esencia musical del cuarteto se mantiene desde su génesis hasta el presente, cabalgando dentro de la polémica, una postura extrema y la admiración.

SLAYER se fundó en 1981, por los estruendosos guitarristas; Jeff Hanneman y Kerry King en california, Estados Unidos, después reclutaron a Tom Araya y por último a Dave Lombardo (miembro más inestable, de la formación inicial, por sus idas y venidas) .

Gracias a la popularidad alcanzada durante la década de los 80’s, a SLAYER se le considera el uno de cuatro grandes del Thrash Metal junto a: METALLICA, MEGADETH y ANTHRAX.

Sus primeros pasos:

La banda inició interpretando covers de Iron Maiden y Judas Priest en clubes musicales del sur de California. Al cuarteto, le surgió la posibilidad de abrir un concierto para el grupo Bitch en el club Woodstock, de la ciudad de los Ángeles. Entre los (as) asistentes se encontraba el periodista Brian Slagel, (fundador de la compañía discográfica Metal Blade Records), quien le ofreció a la agrupación, un contrato discográfico.

Posteriormente, el resto es historia…

Cuando se les ha consultado acerca de su estilo musical, sus miembros comentan que ellos no interpretan Thrash Metal, ni Speed Metal; sólo el SLAYER Metal. Su estilo particular, sirvió y sirve de inspiración a muchos artistas, grupos, géneros musicales y hasta tributos por todo el mundo.

SLAYER fue incluido en la lista del canal  VH1 entre los 100 artistas más grandes de Hard Rock de la historia, ocupando el puesto 50.

Kerry King y Jeff Hanneman ocupan el décimo lugar en la lista de los 100 guitarristas más grandes de todos los tiempos, según la revista Guitar World.

Para el año 2007, la revista Revolver, realizó una encuesta en la que SLAYER apareció nominada entre los cinco primeros puestos de las categorías:

• la mejor banda de la historia,
• la mejor banda en directo,
• banda del año (2007),
• Dave Lombardo fue nombrado el mejor baterista y
• el dúo King – Hanneman - mejor guitarrista / equipo de guitarristas.

La controversia:

Entre la polémica que rodea las letras de sus canciones se puede citar a: “Jihad”, tema incluido en el álbum “Christ illusion”, el cual evoca las familias de las víctimas de los atentados del 11 de septiembre y  la perspectiva de un terrorista religioso. SLAYER argumentó que la canción está relatada sin ser comprensivo con la causa, y sin apoyar a ningún lado del conflicto.

A lo largo de su vasta trayectoria, surgió un enfrentamiento verbal entre SLAYER y MEGADETH. Corría el año de 1984, y Dave Mustaine, buscaba músicos para crear su propia banda, Kerry King se ofreció voluntario, y su ofrecimiento fue aceptado. King solo duró 5 conciertos al lado de Mustaine, argumentando falta de tiempo y que deseaba ofrecer su talento a su propia banda.

Por consiguiente, Mustaine reaccionó tildando a los miembros de SLAYER como “engreídos”. Luego, en el “Clash of Titans” de 1991, Mustaine le dijo a Araya que le “chupara el pene”, a lo que el bajista le respondió. “homosexual”.

Luego de ese incidente, King expresó en varias ocasiones: “Mustaine es un “chupapenes” todo el mundo le odia y que es un dictador”. Pero, en años recientes, el “tatuado” moderó sus palabras por el “colorado”: “lo admiro como guitarrista, pero, lo considero un hipócrita”.

Para el año 2010, SLAYER y MEGADETH volvieron a coincidir bajo el cartel de: The Big Four, más King no compartió escenario con Mustaine en la interpretación de “Am I Evil?”.

Fuera de combate:

Desde hace dos años (2009), SLAYER canceló varias presentaciones debido a quebrantos de salud por parte de algunos de sus miembros.

Por ejemplo, parte de la gira “American Carnage Tour 2010” se pospuso, debido a que Tom Araya sufría fuertes dolores de cuello. Los médicos comprobaron que los años de realizar “headbanging” habían hecho mella en sus vertebras compactándolas hasta aplanarlas, y fue necesario extirparlas cambiándolas por una placa de titanio. El resultado de esta operación fue la eliminación total del dolor, pero, con un inconveniente, Araya no podrá realizar “headbanging”.

Jeff Hanneman se encuentra en proceso de recuperación – rehabilitación luego de ser sometido a una intervención quirúrgica, en el 2011, producto de una picadura de araña en uno de sus brazos.

Hanneman retornó de forma sorpresiva sobre un escenario durante la actuación de SLAYER en Indio, California, Estados Unidos como parte del Tour “Big Four”. Hanneman interpretó junto con su banda los temas: “South Of Heaven” y “Angel Of Death”.

De forma interina: Pat O’Brien (de CANNIBAL CORPSE) y Gary Holt (de EXODUS) han ocupado el puesto de Hanneman.

Amados, odiados, polémicos y consentidos, así es parte del peregrinar musical de SLAYER, a la cual le queda mucho recorrido…
