RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS (RHCP) es una banda de Funk / Rock fundada en 1983, surgida en los Ángeles, California, Estados Unidos, desde el contexto de una cultura underground (del hip hop y el punk, que interpretaba temas clásicos del Funk).
(RHCP) comenzó a ensamblar su carrera musical en el instituto Fairfax de Los Angeles, en 1983, cuando Michael Blazary (más conocido como “Flea”), Hillel Slovak y Jack Irons (PEARL JAM) formaron una banda, bajo el nombre de: “Anthym“, a la cual se unió: Anthony Kiedis.
Poco tiempo después, adoptaron el nombre que los catapultó a nivel mundial: RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, derivado del chiste sobre “Chili Willi and the Red Hot Peppers“, una banda Country de los años 70′s.
El primer Demo del cuarteto grabado en un cassette, e incluyó los temas: “Out in L.A.” (primer tema compuesto como grupo, aportado por Kiedis) , “Green Heaven” y “You always sing the same“. Motivados, pero, sin éxito, un buen día se les ocurrió salir a tocar en vivo, desnudos, en una presentacion en el Kit Kat Club, y con una media en los genitales. Tras la presentación, todo Los Ángeles hablaba de ellos (por su original y curiosa mezcla de Punk / Funk) , tras lo cual, el sello discográfico EMI decidió contratarlos.
ALGUNAS CURIOSIDADES
- El primer manager del grupo: Paul Biels, fue despedido tan sólo dos semanas después de haberse formado la banda.
- Michael Balzary (Flea), sólo sabía tocar la trompeta antes de empezar con los RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, fue Hillel Slovak y el chileno Alain Johannes (amigo de ellos, con quien formaron un grupo llamado Anthym), quienes le enseñaron a tocar el bajo.
- Tras la muerte de su amigo y guitarrista de la banda Hillel Slovak, Anthony Kiedis decidió aprender sobre temas espirituales (conoció al Dalai Lama), abandonó el uso de las drogas, y acude periódicamente a una sesión de acupuntura.
- John Frusciante, ex guitarrista de la (RHCP) era un fanático de la banda. Presenció un concierto de los PEPPERS a la edad de 15 años. Se hizo amigo de Hillel Slovak y posteriormente del baterista D.H. Peligro (Dead Kennedys), improvisando varias veces con él y Flea. Tras la muerte de Hillel, la banda contrató a DeWayne “Blackbyrd” McKnight (de GEORGE CLINTON), pero no convencía a Kiedis y a Flea. Luego, Flea recordó las improvisaciones con John, y le hicieron una audición y consideraron que era él relevo perfecto para Hillel.
- Anthony Kiedis aparece dentro del público en el videoclip de NIRVANA: “Smells Like a Teen Spirit“.
- Los miembros del grupo son fanáticos de otras agrupaciones:, entre ellas: GERMS (Kiedis en su auto virtual del video: Californication, muestra el nombre de este grupo), de SEX PISTOLS por lo que Flea les dedicó el cover “Anarcht in the UK” y han aparecido en varias películas, por ejemplo en “Back to the Future“.
- El actor Jim Carrey declinó a participar en el videoclip: “By the Way” como el taxista, debido a que no le gustaba la canción.
- Un miércoles 2 de octubre del 2002, los (RHCP) se presentaron por primera vez en Costa Rica, y su actuación se celebró en el Estadio Eladio Rosabal Cordero, en la provincia de Heredia.
- En el 2008, los RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS recibieron una estrella en el paseo de la fama en Hollywood, California, Estados Unidos.
- El lunes 12 de octubre del 2011, actuará por segunda vez en Costa Rica, los (RHCP) y el epicentro musical se ubicará en el nuevo Estadio Nacional, en La Sabana, al oeste de la ciudad capital: San José.

La historia de “Dani California” (tema inspirado en todas las mujeres con las que ha compartido a lo largo de su vida, Kiedis) del álbum Stadium Arcadium, el vocalista continúa la vida de “Dani, the girl” que aparece en la canción: “By the Way” , y por primera vez en la canción: “Californication” se menciona en el verso: “a teenage bride with a baby inside” ( una novia adolescente con un bebé dentro).
Quince años después de la grabacion del álbum: “Blood Sugar Sex Magik“, los RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS volvieron a “The Mansion” para grabar “Stadium Arcadium“.
En un concierto de promoción del disco Stadium Arcadium en París, en el 2006, el cuarteto interpretó la canción: “Sex Rap” del album Freaky Styley, después de no haberla tocado desde 1988.
Durante la gira por Australia y Nueva Zelanda en el 2007, tocaron canciones como “Higher Ground“, “Nobody Weird Like Me” o “Catholic School Girls Rule“. Las dos primeras son canciones de su álbum: Mother’s Milk, de 1989 y “Catholic School Girls Rule” pertenece al Freaky Styley de 1985, que hasta la fecha del concierto (19/04/2007) no habían sido tocadas, desde 1991.

Para su segundo disco, contaron con la colaboración de George Clinton de “Parliament Funkadelic“. Para promocionar el álbum, los (RHCP) editaron los videoclips: “JungleMan” y ” Catholic School Girls Rule“, y desarrollaron una pequeña gira por los Estados Unidos.

Los (RHCP) contrataron a Andy Gill conocido como: “Dr. Funkestein” para producir su primer álbum, autotitulado: “Red Hot Chili Peppers” de 1984. La colaboración no germinó los resultados deseados, debido a que Gill, trató de sacar a la banda, un sonido más Pop, en vez de, su fusión: Punk / Funk.
