JUDAS PRIEST es un grupo originario de Birmingham, Inglaterra, creado en 1969 , cuyo estilo musical abarca el Heavy Metal / Hard Rock & el Speed Metal.
Se considera a JUDAS PRIEST como un importante e influyente grupo británico de Heavy Metal, y precursor de la Nueva Ola del Heavy Metal Británico (NWOBHM) junto a agrupaciones como: MOTÖRHEAD y IRON MAIDEN.
El génesis de JUDAS PRIEST:
Luego de la disolución de la agrupación: SUGAR STACK (cuya propuesta musical se basó en el Rock / Blues), Al Atkins, el bajista Bruno Stapenhill y el baterista John Partridge, conformaron los cimientos de la banda que adoptó por nombre: JUDAS PRIEST (dicho nombre surgió porque un día Stapenhill revisaba su colección de acetatos, y apareció uno de Bob Dylan, titulado: “John Wesley Harding“, en el cual se incluyó el tema: “The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest“, y de este título se adoptó, el nombre del proyecto).
Motivados por incluir otro guitarrista, es contratado John Perry (quien al poco tiempo, falleció en un accidente automovilístico). Posteriormente, el puesto le fue heredado a Ernie Chataway (guitarrista, tecladista y armónica), quien motivó a sus nuevos compañeros para componer sus propios temas.
Atkins, Stapenhill, Chataway y Partridge grabaron un cassette bajo el nombre de JUDAS PRIEST, el cual contenía los temas: “We’ll Stay Together” y “Good Time Woman“. La grabación les permitió firmar un contrato discográfico de tres años con el sello: Inmediate Records, (propiedad de Andrew Loog Oldham, empresario que descartó firmar a THE BEATLES, en sus primeros años, pero, firmó a THE ROLLING STONES). Al poco tiempo, los jóvenes PRIEST, grabaron los temas: “Holy is the Man” y “Mind Conception“, que se transformó en el Demo titulado: “Holy is the Man“, una rareza de la banda, ya que nunca fue lanzado oficialmente, debido a que el sello discográfico quebró, y como nota anecdótica, el propio Al Atkins, conservó varias copias del mismo.
Atkins,escuchó un ensayo de K.K. Downing, Ian Hill y John Ellis (unidos bajo el nombre de FREIGHT), y de inmediato les propuso reformar las filas de JUDAS PRIEST. La nueva formación comenzó a trabajar en buscar un sonido propio y lograron presentarse en vivo (por primera vez en su historia) un 16 de marzo de 1971, en el Essington St. John’s Hall, como banda telonera de THIN LIZZY.
John Ellis ofreció su última presentación con el grupo un 6 de octubre de 1971, en el Derby Yeoman, dando paso al baterista Alan Moore (quien debutó el 15 de octubre de 1971) en el Newport Comunity Center.
Para 1972, Moore es sustituido por Chris “Congo”Campbell. Esta nueva formación duró hasta mayo de 1973, lapso de tiempo durante el cual, JUDAS PRIEST, compartió escenario con: Gary Moore, SUPERTRAMP, MAGNUM, STATUS QUO, SLADE, BUDGIE, FAMILY, SPIRIT, etc… y auto-grabaron el sencillo: “The Age of the Tyrant” el cual contenía el tema: “The Tyrant“, pero, los resultados económicos no eran visibles, ni suficientes. Por tal razón, Al Atkins (casado y con un hijo) y Chris “Congo”Campbell abandonaron el “barco”, en búsqueda de un mejor horizonte.
Downing y Hill decidieron continuar con el proyecto, y obtubieron la aprovación de Atkins para utilizar el nombre: JUDAS PRIEST y las canciones compuestas junto a él. Luego el dúo, incluyó al vocalista Rod Halford (ex HIROSHIMA) (novio en aquel entonces, de la hermana de Ian Hill) y al baterista John Hinch (ex BAKERLOO, ex HIROSHIMA). Esta formación: Downing, Hill, Halford y John Hinch, giraron varios meses y para 1973, grabaron un Demo de producción independiente, titulado: “Ladies“, el cual contenía 3 temas: “Ladies“, “Run of the Mill” y “Caviar and Meths“, pero, a la fórmula, le faltaba un elemento más por agregar…
El Demo: “Ladies” les permitió acceder a un contrato discográfico con el sello Gull Records (quienes querían integrar un tecladista o un trompetista al grupo), pero, al final se incluyó al guitarrista Glenn Tipton (ex THE FLYING HAT BAND) quien aportó un sonido más pesado y trajo consigo nuevas ideas, en cuanto a la composición de los temas. Con el ingreso de Tipton, llego el cambio de baterista, ingresó John Ellis.
Ya en las filas de Gull Records, JUDAS PRIEST, grabaron el Demo: “Rocka Rolla” de 1974, que contenía los temas: “Rocka Rolla” (Lado A) y “Never Satisfied” (aportado por Atkins) (Lado B). Sin dejar pasar mucho tiempo, un 6 de septiembre de 1974, se produjo el lanzamiento oficial de su primer LP, titulado: “Rocka Rolla“. El resto es historia…
2011: Vientos de cambio
El pasado 7 de diciembre de 2010, después de 36 años sobre los escenarios, JUDAS PRIEST, anunció su “última gira mundial de despedida”, titulada: Epitaph World Tour (la cual estará presente en suelo costarricense, el próximo 27 de septiembre del 2011, en el nuevo Estadio Nacional, situado en La Sabana, al oeste de la ciudad capital, San José).
Para el 10 de febrero del 2011, Glenn Tipton (quien publicó en su Web site, que: Epitaph World Tour, sería su última gira mundial con la banda, sin embargo, aclaró que el finalizar el ciclo de presentaciones mundiales, no representaría el final de JUDAS PRIEST, porque publicarán nuevo material discográfico, en un futuro venidero) fue nominado por la revista británica Total Guitar, como uno de los mejores guitarristas de Heavy Metal, de todos los tiempos.
Posteriormente, el 20 de abril de 2011, el legendario guitarrista K.K.Downing anunció su salida del quinteto (alegando problemas en las relaciones con el resto de la banda, diferencias musicales y con el manager, y antes de realizar una gira con malos sentimientos, decidió retirarse de forma amigable). Ante tal acontecimiento inesperado, el resto de sus compañeros de JUDAS PRIEST, anunciaron que en su re-emplazo, ingresaría el guitarrista: Richie Faulkner (ex LAUREN HARRIS).
Tanto JUDAS PRIEST, como su personal de soporte están muy ilusionados con esta gira, y realizaron un llamado a sus seguidor@s de todo el mundo para compartir con ellos, el Epitaph World Tour.
Resta mucho tiempo para conocerse el final de la leyenda, sobre los inspiradores, influyentes y ensordecedores: JUDAS PRIEST…

Este CD es una compilación de temas del quinteto, escogida por ellos mismos. Una edición remasterizada fue lanzada en 2001, con la misma lista de canciones seleccionadas. Todos los álbumes publicados hasta esa fecha, están representados con la excepción del primero: Rocka Rolla, aunque, una versión en vivo, de “Victim of Changes” se utiliza en lugar de la versión de estudio de “Sad Wings of Destiny” (debido a que JUDAS PRIEST no posee los derechos, sobre sus dos primeros álbumes.
Este álbum también trajo el retorno momentáneo del vocalista Rob Halford, luego de su salida de la banda, debido a las tensiones internas. La portada de Metal Works ’73 – ’93 fue diseñada por: Mark Wilkinson (quien plasmó esta portada, basado en cada una de las portadas anteriores, de los álbumes de JUDAS PRIEST).

Producido por Tom Allom / JUDAS PRIEST. Este álbum fue grabado en Miraval Studios, en Brignoles, Francia, a principios de 1990, y mezclado en Wisseloord Studios, en Hilversum, Países Bajos. El LP y el CD originales fueron lanzados el 3 de septiembre de 1990. Además marcó el ingreso de un nuevo baterista: Scott Travis (FIGHT, RACER X) y el aporte del tecladista Don Airey y “Painkiller” obtuvo el reconocimiewnto de “Disco de oro” en 1990.
La versión remasterizada en CD fue lanzada en mayo del 2001 e incluyó los temas extras:

Producido por Tom Allom. El álbum (mezclado en Criteria Recordings de Miami, Florida y masterizado por: Mike Fuller) fue editado un 21 de Junio 1987. Los temas fueron grabados de las presentaciones ofrecidas por el quinteto en: The Omni (un 15 de junio de 1986 en Atlanta, Georgia) y Reunion Arena (un 27 de junio de 1986 en Dallas, Texas) , y se constituyó, en el segundo disco en directo, de JUDAS PRIEST. Además contaron con la colaboración de: Patrice Wilkinson Levinsohn (ingeniero de sonido) y Charles Dye (asistente de ingeniero).
La re-edición de este álbumde dió en el 2002, y se incluyó el DVD: “Electric Eye” mostrando la presentanción completa ofrecida en el Reunion Arena.

Producido por Tom Allom. La portada fue diseñada por Doug Johnson. Este álbum fue grabado en los Compass Point Studios en Nassau, Bahamas y mezclado en (de enero a febrero de 1986) Record Plant en Los Angeles, California. Este disco trajo consigo, una innovación del estilo musical: mezclando el Pop y el Glam (para intentar vender más discos). La fórmula fue poco apetecida en esa época por l@s seguidor@s del grupo, pero, con el pasar de los años, se convirtió, en un clásico, en la discografía del quinteto. Rob Halford, frustrado por tener que ocultar su condición sexual, intentó quitarse la vida, ingiriendo una alta dosis de analgésicos.
Este álbum fue remasterizado en el 2002, e incluyó: “All fired up” y “Locked in (Live)”

Producido por Tom Allom. “British Steel” catapultó la carrera musical de JUDAS PRIEST a nivel mundial, el cual tiene un transfondo social, debido al entorno en que vivían los integrantes del grupo y los acontecimientos desarrollados en la sociedad británica, de esa época. A su vez, plantó la semilla de la denominada NEW WAVE OF BRITISH HEAVY METAL. De él, se desprende unos de los himnos metal por excelencia: “Breaking the Law” (el cual tiene su propio videoclip).
La remasterización de “British Steel” del 2001, incluyó:

Producido por James Guthrie / JUDAS PRIEST. Este álbum: “Hell Bent for Leather” fue conocido como: “Killing Machine” en el Reino Unido. Cuando este disco apareció en el mercado discográfico estadounidense, la multinacional Columbia/CBS no aprobó “la violencia del título” y por motivos comerciales, fue re-bautizado como: “Hell Bent for Leather“.
Para la época del lanzamiento de este álbum, JUDAS PRIEST, comenzó a utilizar su histórica indumentaria de cuero. “Hell Bent for Leather” fue remasterizado en 2001, y se incluyó el tema: Fight For Your Life – 4:06

Producido por Dennis Mackay / JUDAS PRIEST. Este álbum se caracteriza por sus letras y riffs pesados, sello de fábrica de JUDAS PRIEST, además se contó con el artista gráfico: Rozslav Szyabo (creador de la portada y del nuevo logotipo).
A su vez, este disco es recordado por el suicidio de dos jóvenes adolescentes (hecho ocurrido en 1990, cuando ambos escucharon la versión de: “Better By You, Better Than Me” (de SPOOKY TOOTH). Las familias dolientes acudieron a la corte, alegando que JUDAS PRIEST incluyó mensajes subliminales en su interpretación, alegato que fue desestimado en el juzgado).
Stained Class fue remasterizado en 2001, y se incluyeron dos temas adicionales: “Fire Burns Below” – 6:58 y “Better By You, Better Than Me” (Live) – 3:24

El álbum fue producido por Rodger Bain (BLACK SABBATH), el cual fue grabado en un estudio, tratando de asemejar una presentación en concierto (el resultado final NO dejó satisfechos a los JUDAS PRIEST.
* Rocka Rolla fue re-editado en 1984 con una portada diferente (nuevo diseño y remozado logotipo). El baterista John Hinch abandonó el quinteto, en 1975, antes de grabar el siguiente álbum de estudio. Posteriormente, Glenn Tipton, dijo que Hinch, era un “músico inadecuado” para los propósitos del grupo.
** Un mito urbano sobre este álbum dice: “Coca Cola Company tomó medidas legales sobre la publicación de este disco, por considerar que la portada se asemejaba mucho, a una marca suya de refrescos”.
